Go The Greyhound Way: The Romance of the Road
Go The Greyhound Way: The Romance of the Road
It is hard to imagine an America without the Greyhound Bus. It is an institution woven into the fabric of the nation. It has provided the mobility that American’s have always treasured. When personal transportation was in its infancy and car ownership limited, Greyhound provided fast, reliable, safe, and economical local and regional transportation for the masses. Increasingly, the company grew in size and scope, achieving the goal of its founders—to develop a nationwide system of transportation. Profusely illustrated with period advertisements, travel brochures, post cards, and archival photographs of depots and buses, this history of the Greyhound Bus Lines offers a unique journey through America’s physical and cultural landscape. Readers can accept this invitation from Greyhound: “There is a graceful Greyhound coach waiting to carry you over Roads of Romance…. Adventure seems to lurk around every corner as you speed along in the sturdy, blue and white Greyhound bus. All the color and romance, all the scenic and historic interest of this American Wonderland are yours to enjoy when you go the Greyhound way.”

Greyhound/Peter Pan Bus Ticket – Hartford, CT to Boston, MA

Greyhound/Peter Pan Bus Ticket - Hartford, CT to Boston, MA
Since Megabus goes to Back Bay Station in Boston instead of South Station, I’ve switched back to Peter Pan (Greyhound essentially in Peter Pan livery) to fulfill my need to get to Logan Airport. I’m pretty sure I can thank Megabus for this, but the prices of Greyhound tickets to go from Hartford to Boston have come down in the past 6 months. Yay for competition!

Two things suck about this though: there’s no wireless internet on these buses, whereas there is on Megabus, and it’s not a straight shot to Boston, there are stops in Worcester and Framingham. Last time the stop in Framingham resulted in us being pretty significantly late.

Rental car–returned!

Rental car--returned!
Total was $60, which is about the same price as a bus ticket would have
been. And Greyhound wanted $45 to ship my bike. Less convenient AND more
expensive. Public transportation fail.

Also, I acquired a baguette (unrelated to the rental car). Let the bike
trip begin!

Vintage Greyhound Bus Tour: America For Me (1950s)
“The more we get around and see the country, the more we know what makes America tick.” Fascinating and enjoyable, American For Me, is about two women who embark on a Greyhound bus tour across America. The journey takes them to important places which highlight American culture, including national parks, Indian villages, New York City, and the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans. Sponsored by Greyhound Lines Company, riding a bus never looked like so much fun as the entire bus breaks into song at the end of the trip.
